Incognito – Alhaurin de la Torre

This is the second time we review a live show by Incognito, and I must say they never disappoint.

Formed by Jean-Paul 'Bluey' Maunick in 1979 and with an ever changing line-up the band has consistently published excellent material within their acid-jazz funk scene.

The concert took place within the Alhaurin de la Torre Jazz Festival at a venue called El Porton del Jazz. You can find out about this venue in previous reviews we have published such as the Marcus Miller concert last year.

Moving on to the concert, this started at around 11 o clock, once the audience had settled down and the scorching heat of the day started to dissipate, as it had been close to 35 degrees centigrade in the afternoon.

The lights then dimmed and the band came on to a thunderous applause by the eager, full to capacity crowd. The band then launched into their well-known instrumental Expresso Madureira with various solos by the brass section, the singers then walked onto stage launched into a near two hour performance covering much of the bands material from classics like Nights over Egypt to numbers from the new album such as Just Say Nothing”. A tribute to Stevie Wonder was also made with a very funky rendition of “As” as well as a soulful cover of Don’t You Worry About a Thing”.

Towards the middle of the show “Bluey” did something quite unexpected, he asked the security guards to let the audience stand and dance towards the front of the venue, and then the concert turned into a party!

The band dished out their more up-tempo numbers to an appreciative crowd who I must say where well behaved given the small space available.

After the show we were lucky to meet “Bluey” himself and get the latest Incognito album “In Search of Better Days” signed.

As to gear “Bluey” was playing his usual Atelier Z Telecaster through a Roland Jazz Chorus 120, the lead guitarist was playing a Gibson 335 into a Deluxe Reverb and the bass player a natural Atelier Z Jazz Bass into an Ampeg Stack. An array of keyboards was used such a Nord Lead, Korg Triton and Roland master keyboard.

An incredible concert indeed.
