Squier Strat FSR – Candy Blue Sparkle – 28/11/2016
We haven’t reviewed a low cost guitar for a while (A Squier
51 was the last I think), so when I purchased this “bling”
axe for my 10 year old daughter recently I thought I would
do a little write up on it for the site to aid any potential
The axe is based on the Affinity Series and is a Limited Edition
Fender Special Run. This particular model is finished in Candy
Blue Sparkle, green and pink sparkle finishes are also available.
The aforementioned sparkle finished
is applied to a full sized alder body which seems to have
the correct Strat dimensions and proportions. This is joined
by a maple neck which seems to be so unfinished that it might
still sprout leaves and is topped off with a rosewood fretboard
of reasonable quality.
Medium Jumbo frets are used, all the hardware is finished in
black with non-locking tuners and a vintage 6 saddle type
tremolo which seems to be decked out for tuning stability.
Fit and Finish.
Obviously this is just one step up from the entry level Bullet
series (avoid those) so you aren’t going get a top level finish
at this price range. The guitar however is well put together
and setup reasonably well. I am sure that with some adjustments
and possibly a few small upgrades it could be made to play
The one thing however that I was very surprised is at the practically
raw piece of wood used for the neck. It’s functional but a
bit of satin varnish would have helped make it look more upmarket
and protect the wood for little outlay.
The paintwork is pretty well applied and the sparkle finish
is bright and even, and looks like it will withstand hours
I tried this guitar with two different setups and to be honest
it gets the job done. The first was a 10-watt practice amp,
a Fender Frontman. This is fine for bedroom practice. However
plug into a decent valve amp such as Fender Blues Junior or
Hot Rod Deluxe (Both which are worth more than double the
guitar price each) and the cleans shimmer and it also does
overdrive pretty well.
A good entry level instrument with a unique finish. For now
it is stock aside from some straplocks fitted for safety but
I am sure my daughter will find a way to “modify” it further!
Also I would have thought it would have been cool of Squier
to offer this guitar with a matching colour case, strap, and
even possibly amp as a complete outfit.
